New Offerings at Ascension
Ascension now offers Screenwriting classes!
Through the generosity of Write Brothers and Circle of Friends Productions, Ascension received a donation of over $12,000 in “Screenwriter” computer software. This donation makes Ascension one of the only elementary schools in the United States to teach screenwriting to students. Mr. Brian Stark will instruct students in the fundamentals of creating movie plots, characters and dialogue. And Screenwritier, Danelle Hand, will give a clinic to students each semester to expand their skills. Besides improving English writing abilities, screenwriting is a fun way for children to learn. It also helps them process emotions in a positive way and understand another person’s point of view. Ascension is proud to add screenwriting to our curriculum.
Let’s learn to play guitar!
While schools across the country have cut music programs for lack of funding, here at Ascension we are adding more. Now in our fifth year, Ascension gives FREE weekly classes in guitar, piano, bells and choir. Besides being fun and a wonderful way for children to process emotions in a positive way, playing an instrument has been scientifically proven to help students do better at math, complete tasks, and work together. Children who play instruments are also more likely to attend college! With instruments donated by Circle of Friends Productions and teachers from Loyola Marymount University, Ascension’s students are receiving thousands of dollars of free lessons each year. Students must maintain a B average and be at least 8 years old. If you are interested, please speak with Mrs. De la Rosa.
Girl Power Day!
Smiles abounded on Tuesday, May 24, as Ascension’s 8th Grade girls celebrated Girl Power Day, where Hollywood makeup artists and hairdressers gave the girls makeovers and taught them about proper skin care, makeup techniques, and eating healthily. A classroom was transformed into a makeup studio for the annual event, hosted by Danelle Hand and RJ Hume of Circle of Friends Productions, to celebrate the girls’ transition into high school and adolescence. The special day also included a catered lunch for the girls, teachers and volunteers where Principal, Mrs. De la Rosa, and Danelle Hand, offered words of wisdom and encouragement to the young ladies concerning the path ahead of them. A professional photographer took portrait photos of the girls in their new “look”. Finally, gift bags were handed out, filled with donations of makeup and school supplies for their high school adventure. To qualify for Girl Power Day, each student must maintain a B average and have approval of both the principal and their parents.
